February 2016
Dear PALS and Caregivers,
Our update today is on fungus and candida. We have covered this before, but the experiences we have had the last 13 months, have been a journey in getting rid of fungus but learning more about it. A year ago in January, Kim was invited by his Idaho golfing buddies to attend a golf tournament just south of Las Vegas, Nevada. Because we were staying in Brownsville, Texas at the time, driving seemed out of the question, so we flew. I had taken our supplements along but could not take any food with us. After about 5 days in Nevada and Arizona, Kim came down with a serious infection, which ended up with a trip to the emergency room in Brownsville right after our return home. He had a urinary tract infection and it required a round of antibiotics to clear it up. I talked to the doc about probiotics. She said just to not take them at the same time as the antibiotics. Our error was not getting anywhere near enough probiotics because for almost a year, Kim was fighting fungus issues. (What we were not aware of at the time was that a urinary tract infection is a fungal infection.) Finally in the summer, Kim did a candida cleanse program and he finally felt better.
Why would he get a fungal infection? Here is my idea. First we could not take our refrigerated sauerkraut (an excellent probiotic) with us on the airplane. Secondly all the meats we consumed over an 8 day period were not organic, essentially they were loaded with antibiotics which is what our meat growers produce. So for days, we were killing his good bacteria with the antibiotic meats and not getting adequate probiotics. It should be noted that I (Kay) developed a lump in my throat in mid-February after that golf tournament. It felt like a glob of mucus and I could never get rid of it. It was worse at night when I laid down. It has stayed with me for a year.
So when the tournament came up this year, I thought we would be much better prepared. First, we could drive up from Yuma and at least take our good breakfast with us. I took extra probiotic tablets, and we had one after each restaurant meal. The rooms at the hotel have no refrigerators or way to keep food cool, so we used ice and a cooler.
We were gone for 5 days. Kim caught a cold the day we got back and then shared it with me the next day. We have not had a cold in years and years. Kim tried to get one a few years back, but we were able to get rid of it right away.
An article came in from Deb Wot's facebook page about a lady that has fought Candida most of her life, and it almost killed her. I was beginning to read this article when it was time to head up north to the golf tournament. She enlightened me so much on the role of bacteria in our body, even fungus, but the damage it can do when it gets out of control with a high carb diet.
So just the other day, I was trying to think about why we both got colds and remembered that colds are a fungus issue and we had both been on an antibiotic diet for days.
The role of fungus in ALS is very real. Kim had fungus in his lungs initially and when he gets too much sugar, it comes back to haunt him.
We frequently eat out once a week or more, but in-between, we are eating organic meats. I have come to realize that too much antibiotic foods can be very dangerous.
The article is very long, but I hope you will take the time to read it. It has implications for PALS and Caregivers as we are all subject to the effects of the foods we eat. She discusses Lyme disease and as hard as that is to get rid of it, she says it is way easier than Candida.
The author, Johnna Wheeler, has a clinic in Austin, Texas and a web site that can be found on the link below. She states that she is writing a book to be published in the fall of 2016. I would order it right now if I could. I realize that many cannot go to Austin, TX to her clinic. However, the more we learn about how to be healthy, the sooner the ALS symptoms will resolve.

Our prayers are with each of our PALS and their families to find ways to heal.

A note from Kim: Another issue I feel is important as we all work on detoxing our bodies is to drink lots of pure water. I try to drink at least three to four quarts per day. It gets me up a few times each night, but I have a system that allows me to go right back to sleep. I believe it is well worth the inconvenience.
Another interesting note is that I sent my EMG and NCS records, as well others to the director of the ALS Clinic at Duke University, Dr. Richard Bedlack. He not only confirmed the original diagnosis, stating "The EMGs are very convincing of a widespread motor neuron disease", and that my improvement has been very impressive and would be characterized as an ALS Reversal "by my program's definition of such." That is a very significant admission by a leading ALS program, and something we were told could not be done.
Dr. Bedlack also has several other confirmed reversals cases and they hope to do a study.
We know we are doing a lot of things right. My progress continues!
Kim
