Dear PALS and Caregivers,

As noted in last month's posting, we have incorporated a new therapy into our protocol known as EWOT, or Exercise With  Oxygen Therapy.  The concept is that oxygen is the key to better health in just about every situation and for every condition.

Though we still have much to learn, we are still excited about EWOT, and feel we are gaining significant benefits.  I remember well how I struggled to breath 5 1/2 years ago.  It is exhilarating to go thru a 15 to 20 minute workout on the stationary bike, breathing some 25 to 30 breaths a minute, sweating profusely, yet not feeling oxygen deprived.  Most any PALS, either in the later stages, or with Bulbar issues as I had, knows precisely what I am saying.

Perhaps the greatest single benefit I have noted is that I am sleeping better, more soundly, and longer.  Shoot, some nights I will get in as many as 7 or 8 hours.  I still become a bit frustrated because I do not have the endurance I have enjoyed most of my life until about 7 years ago, but I also must remember the advancing years have a little to do with that, as well as the ALS.  By the time 10 or 10:30 rolls around, sometimes much earlier, I am always ready to call it a day.  My weight is down just a bit, most likely due to the warm weather and all the work in the garden, but Kay swears the atrophy in my right calf is continuing to decrease.  She notes this from those sweet feet and calf essential oil massages I get most every night.  And yes, there are definitely upsides to being the patient.  She spoils me terribly, and I just have to put up with it.

There are writings and publications extolling the benefits of EWOT.  I have yet to find any that relate directly to those of us that are battling ALS.  Yet common sense tells us the benefits to PALS is equal to that of any other disease or condition.  The increased oxygen transfer to our bodily cells will make everything else we do - diets, supplements, detoxing, etc., more effective.  Even the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects we feel are so critical in this fight will feel a boost.

As we mentioned in last month's post, one very significant benefit of the EWOT system is that it is so much more affordable, as well as convenient.  We already had a couple oxygen concentrators.  We spent less than $1200 on the EWOT storage bag and breathing masks, and other equipment, and another $360 on a nicer exercise bike, all this versus the $25,000 we spent for our hyperbaric chamber.  Though you can spend 2 to 4 thousand dollars on an oxygen concentrator, there are better deals out there.  You may also find good used or rebuilt concentrators by searching on-line; eBay, Craig's List, local newspaper outlets and websites and I am sure other places, for much less money.  (We paid about $250 for our last 6 liter machine after our $2500 machine died  over three years ago.  It still works great.) Though it is nice to have a 10 liter per minute oxygen output, a 5 liter machine will also suffice.  It just takes longer to fill the oxygen storage bag.

We purchased our system through EWOT-USA.com. We have also benefited by the use of another website, Promolife.com, that soon will be carrying EWOT equipment and supplies.  We have asked that both companies offer a discount to those fighting this battle with us.  Both are appreciative of the contacts coming from you, our PALS.  But those kickbacks will go directly to each of you, not to us.  Just mention Kim Cherry to get a discount on your order if you decide it is a good option for you.  Our reward will be hearing from you of the benefits we hope you will discover.

We again stress the importance of baking soda and magnesium.  We are taking 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in a cup of magnesium water 30 minutes before starting the EWOT session of about 15 to 20 minutes.  The magnesium we are using is magnesium chloride flakes.  The flakes just dissolve in water and in fact, you must keep them dry until ready to use or they will dissolve in a humid environment.  To make the magnesium water, add 1/2 teaspoon of magnesium chloride flakes to one quart or liter of water.  These two supplements help draw the oxygen into the cells.  The baking soda also helps to alkaline the body and the magnesium helps with detoxing among many other things.  This is all documented in Dr. Mark Sircus's book, Anti-Inflammatory Oxygen Therapy we referenced last month.  It is a very good read.

We ordered our magnesium chloride flakes at www.myworldhut.com.  Kay bought 5 pounds for about $40 which included the shipping.  That will last a long time.  We also noticed that the flakes are sold on www.swansonvitamins.com in 2 pound bags.  You could drink the magnesium water through the day to get more magnesium.

We are so proud of all you PALS that have the courage and fortitude to battle ALS.  Many of you are making good progress.  We love hearing from you, and speaking or Skyping/FaceTiming with you.  We try to keep a file on every contact.  We consider you our family.  You are constantly in our prayers.

May God Bless You, all our PALS, and those that are supporting you and loving you in this courageous fight.

Kim

EWOT Updates:

7-30-2017
Kay has asked that I write an update as to my feelings about EWOT, and any benefits I am feeling.

We started using our EWOT system about the 24th of April, just over three months ago.  The original recommendation was that the Exercise With Oxygen Therapy  be done 15 minutes a day, at least three times per week. Be it good or bad, I have followed my standard premise that if some is good, more is better, and have been doing the EWOT five or six times a week, from 20 to 30 minutes, logging from 5 to 9 miles on the stationary bike, and burning between 200 and 250  calories per session.  Though at the conclusion of each session I am sweating profusely, I am not winded, or even exhausted.  The fact that I can review the latest news or read articles on an iPad while exercising makes the time pass easily.  Generally, the reason I stop when I do is that I extinguish my supply of oxygen from the storage bag, which holds approximately 900 liters.  Remembering 5 1/2 years ago when I struggled to climb is simple flight of stairs, the feeling of being able to push myself with the EWOT is exhilarating.

I believe the profuse sweating is pushing a lot of toxins from my body.  But with those go a lot of the minerals that must be replaced.  Thus the supplements and magnesium water Kay keeps pouring down me. (Bananas help replace the lost potassium.)

I believe the benefits of this program will continue to reveal themselves as time goes on.  There are three benefits that I have noted thus far that are worthy of mention.  Getting quality sleep has been an issue my whole life, and we feel it has been a significant issue to my susceptibility to the ALS diagnosis.  Though my sleep habits improved substantially over the first couple years of my recovery, the challenges of an active life have brought on a significant reduction in the quality of my sleep time.  I have definitely seen improvements in my sleep patterns the past month.

For the past couple of years, I have found myself struggling with incontinence issues.  I am certain I am the only one that has had this issue, but over the past month, I have seen a significant improvement in this area.   My  time-outs to use my bedside urinal have decreased from 5 or 6 times a night to one or two.  These improvements in themselves justify the investment in our EWOT system.

The third area of improvement I have noted is the issue with my weight.  I have been struggling to maintain my weight in the mid-180 range.  Over the past month, I have noted my weight settling in the 190 range.   This is even with the decrease midnight avocados I am missing because of my improved sleep.  We also see some improved muscle tone in my right calf muscle, and believe that the increased oxygenation is benefiting all muscles throughout my body.

We have several PALS that are also implementing the EWOT system, as well as the ozone therapies.  We have also suggested other contacts with non-ALS issues likewise consider EWOT. We are anxiously awaiting feedback from all.

For any interested in the implementation of your own EWOT program, we encourage you to research, as we have done. There are two companies that we have dealt with and have been pleased with not only the quality of their products and service, but their interest in the work with which we are engaged.  They have both offered a 15% discount for any referencing our website, or ALS.  They are found at www.ewot-usa.com, and www.promolife.com, which also handles complete ozone systems.  We receive no commissions for any sales to you, all discounts going directly to you, our PALS.

We would greatly appreciate any experience or feedback any of you may care to share.

December 2017 update

As the year comes to an end, I now have 8 months of experience with EWOT.  Though I have settled back to three tmes per week, 20 to 30 minutes per session, I still feel it is a critical therapy to my continued improvements.Though I use a 10 lpm oygen concentrator, I believe  a 5 or 6 lpm machine would be adequate, and certainly more affordable.  As we are living out of an RV in Arizona during the cold Idaho winters, I simply throw the EWOT bag on the bed to fill it up and fold it up when I'm done.  Though we receive no keepbacks from PALS purchases, we do have companies that provide specail discounts for PALS or those that reference our name or website.  I enthusiastically recommend EWOT for not only PALS but for everyone, especially those battling cancer or breathing issues.  Our standard disclaimer still applies.  I am not a specialist or trained in any medical field, but I am beating ALS.  I believe this works for me.

A PALS shared her experience with EWOT on Facebook.  Here are her comments:

Happy Easter All! I just wanted to share some positive testimony this morning. I just spent thirty minutes in church singing praise to God and didn't have an ounce of shortness of breath. About two months ago I couldn't get through one song without feeling winded. Thank you Kim and Kay Cherry for sharing your knowledge of EWOT with me. I have been doing it 3-4x/week for about a month now and what a HUGE difference!  Jennifer Veech Youngs.
