Possible Causes of Kim's ALS
We don't really know the causes of ALS, but we believe one of the main ones is toxicity. Kim has seven mercury fillings and eight gold crowns, which most likely also include mercury. Kim had the mercury fillings replaced using safe removal methods. He used ozone before and after the procedures. You should consider a biological dentist who know the proper methods for safe removal of the mercury and never have more than the fillings replaced from one quarter of the mouth at a time. Repeat appointments should not be in divisions of 7, so eight days or twelve days, just not 7 days or 14 days or 21 days. Kim used a toxic shampoo for many, many years. His office was above our welding shop and not sealed off well enough, so he was breathing welding smoke. Welding smoke coated the walls, glass, keyboard, everything in the office and his lungs. He used toxins to kill gophers in our yard. We put a swim-in-place pool in our home and kept it clear with chlorine, which is a toxin. We can trace back the start of the ALS symptoms to about the time we put in the pool. Stress can also be a huge causative factor along with not getting enough sleep. Both have huge impacts on your health. Kim feels the stress and lack of sleep were big contributors to his ALS, as he was running two businesses and rarely sleeping more than five or six hours a night.
Another possible cause could be magnesium deficiency. Although Kim had taken some magnesium in the form on Natural Calm for some time before his diagnosis, I believe that the drugs taken during heart surgery contributed to magnesium deficiency. Dr. Perlmutter has stated in one of his books that athletes are more suceptible to ALS. His theory is that excessive exercise creates too many free radicals. That may be true, but exercise also depletes your body of magnesium and not replacing it after exercise could create magnesium deficiency.
Symptoms and resolutions (Kim)
Foot Drop-In hind sight, this started three to four years before my diagnosis. I started putting duct tape on the toes of my shoes sometime in 2010, which reduced the tripping and falls. This is one area that has not improved as I would have hoped. And I have significant hammer toes on both feet, but moreso on my right foot. However, I no longer need to use the duct tape, and I seldom trip.
Balance-My balance started declining substantially also years before my diagnosis. At the time, I attributed it to aging. It wasn’t until the diagnosis that I realized it was one of the first signs of ALS onset. We learned recently from Dr. Russell Blaylock that loss of balance is one of the first significant signs of gluten sensitivity. Oh, how I loved my homemade bread.
Loss of foot and ankle strength-This coincided with the foot drop. Though I believe it is improving, I can still not lift on to my toes, or back on my heels. Special note of the fall of 2014: I started rubbing coconut oil on the bottom of my feet every morning before putting on my socks. In about 6 weeks, I noticed that I could lift my toes better than before and in early January of 2015, I was able to raise just a little bit onto my toes.
Right calf muscle severely atrophied-I had microscopic knee surgery on my left knee from a fall on the golf course in 2008, because of those balance issues. For some time, I thought it was swelling in my left calf that wouldn’t recede, when in actuality, it was my right calf that had begun to atrophy. Though it is still considerably smaller and weaker than my left calf, I feel it is getting stronger, and I believe I am starting to get more muscle definition.
Difficulty getting enough air to breathe-We installed a swim-in-place pool in our home in 2006, and thereafter, I swam regularly. I started noticing a decline in my breathing in the spring of 2010, which became drastic during the summer and fall until I could no longer swim at all. All the tests led to a mitral valve prolapse in my heart, and open heart surgery in December 2010. This provided minimal improvement initially, then the decline continued, ending in the ALS Prognosis. My greatest improvement the past 1 ½ years has been in my ability to breath. I expect to restart my swimming program when we return to Idaho in a few weeks. In April of 2014 we were staying at an RV resort in South Texas. They had a lap pool. I was able to swim a mile in that lap pool in early April 2014. In 2011 and 2012, I could not even get in a body of water as the pressure would crush my chest and I could not breathe.
Difficulty speaking and inability to sing and play the harmonica - This issue coincided with my ability to get an adequate amount of oxygen. I noticed it in three areas. First was my ability to sing the hymns at our church services. I would sing for a time, then the coughing spells would start. these gradually worsened until I know longer even tried to sing. The speaking issues were similar. In my business, I spent a significant amount of time talking with customers on the telephone. As 2012 came, I found it more difficult to carry on conversations on the phone of any significant length, and would soon start coughing. Or I simply could not generate enough air force to get my words out. Some time in February or March of 2012, I pretty much discontinued taking phone calls that were not deemed critical. Each Sunday for many years, we have spent time in Assisted Living Facilities, with my playing my harmonica to my wife's singing. Though I did not stop this during our worse months, it was indeed a struggle to blow the harmonica, and we frequently cut our Sunday visits short because of this issue. All these issues slowly resolved over the summer of 2012. In December of 2012, I actually joined a Christmas Choir with my wife while we were in Texas.
Difficulty swallowing-16 months ago, I would easily choke on a sip of straight water, and sometimes even my own siliva. For the next year, I drank only carbonated water. Though I still carbonate, I can now enjoy a glass of milk, as long as I supplement the milk with other foods. If I try to drink a full glass of non-carbonated drink, I feel that heavy chest feeling, indicating fluid in my lungs. But I expect this to continue to improve.
Inability to breathe when laying down at night-At my worst condition, it would take me 15 to 30 minutes to work from a reclining position to being able to lay flat on my back. I could not lay on my side. The coughing was almost incessant. This issue has completely resolved.
Loss of stamina and strength-When we left Idaho in October of 2012, I could still not load the lower compartments of our RV. I had improved considerably over the previous 6 to 8 months, but I was still not able to do really any kind of exercise, especially swimming. I could do a couple push-ups, but it left me exhausted and fighting for air. This morning, I did 25 pushups, and had no breathing problems. I can climb ladders and stairs and actually feel like I am physically working again. And my golf game continues to improve. I plan on walking 18 holes this summer.
I was also noticing a significant loss in my hand strength. I had trouble opening the food jars my wife has always handed me. My hand strength has continued to improve, and I feel it is close to normal today. My hand strength was one area that particularly impressed Dr. Harch when we met with him in February of 2012. Not only are my hands relatively strong, registering about 115# on the grip test, but they pretty much held constant during the two follow-up grip readings during his exam.
Weight Loss-I am 6’ 3” and have weighed from 210 to 220 for 30 years. My weight started declining in 2010, especially after the heart surgery. It dropped to a low of 177# in February, 2012. I now weigh a healthy 190# to 195#.
Fasciculation’s and muscle cramps - These are both very common to PALS and I certainly had them early in my diagnosis. I have always had issues with leg cramps, especially when I walk the golf course in warm weather, and don't drink enough water. But the cramps I was suffering in late 2011 and the first part of 2012 seemed to attach my arms, and hands, was well as throughout my leg. Though the fasciculation’s are still there, I don't feel them, or really even observe them. The muscle cramps started going away, mostly with the hyperbaric and ozone treatments. I seldom have any muscle cramping now, even after walking a round of golf. Getting adequate water and magnesium are also helps for muscle cramps. There is a recipe for a magnesium rub (or lotion) that can be found on our Misc page that really helps with muscle cramps
Two Phases for healing ALS
According to Eric Edney (see resources tab), there are two phases for improving ALS. We'll address these on other pages.
1 - Stopping the progression of the disease by eliminating toxins in your home and environment and clearing toxins from the body.
2 - Restoring the body through proper nutrition (real food) and exercise.
Eric Edney who has had ALS as diagnosed since 1993 or 1996, has a web site with excellent information on how to do both. We have not followed his protocol exactly because we didn’t find out about him until sometime after Kim’s diagnosis. However, many of the things we have done have accomplished the same thing only through a different means. His web site is www.ericiswinning.com. The information on the phases are under his Regimen tab. He died of complications of a stroke and heart problems in January of 2015.
Quick Start
After 2 1/2 years of study, I believe that there are 4 things you have to begin with to begin healing.
1. Believe you can get better. If you have complete faith in your doctor that there is nothing that can be done to heal, then don't read any further and plan your funeral. If you want to get better and live to fulfill your mission in life, then learn everything you can to improve your health, put aside all negative beliefs (including all doctors or others that say you cannot get better) and give your mind and body the tools to heal.
2. Get proper magnesium. So much of our current lifestyles and food supply deplete our bodies of magnesium. The farmers are not adding magensium in their fertilizers, so natural foods can even be defucient of magnesium. Magnesium is critical for energy, temperature regulation, systhesis of protein, heling transmit nerve signals, relaxing muscles, dealing with stress in both body and mind. PALS certainly desparately need each of those things. See references to Dr. Carolyn Dean and the information from Butch.
3. Get coconut oil into your diet. If you have a diet heavy in carbohydrates, you may need as much as 9 tablespoons per day or less if your diet in not heavy in carbohydrates. You will probably have to experiment to see what is the right amount for you. Again here is a link to some incredible information on coconut oil - http://www.highexistence.com/topic/coconut-oil-by-dr-carolyn-dean-and-its-health-benefits/
4. Get rid of the toxins. See section below.
Avoiding toxins in a toxic world (Kay)
Everything you breathe, everything you eat and everything you rub in your skin affects your health. You absorb water even in a shower. Is your water free of fluoride and aluminum and other harmful chemicals? Is your shampoo and soap safe to use? Kim's favorite shampoo has two toxic ingredients in the first three ingredients listed. He rubbed that into his head every day for over 30 years. I don't believe that is the only reason he got ALS but certainly could have been one of the contributors. The cosmetic industry is not regulated so they can put anything they want in their products. By the way, your body has a liver to try to detoxify what you eat, but the skin has no such protection. What are you absorbing through your skin?
Are your cleaning products safe to use and breathe? We heard the story of a young mother in our area that died cleaning her bathroom. I recently learned that Air Freshners are related to Agent Orange. Don't use them.
I have quit using my microwave. Microwaves generate radiation. Radiation causes cancer. Microwaving your food destroys important nutrients. Microwaving in plastic inserts the plastic into your foods. Especially dangerous is letting water sit in a plastic bottle in a hot car. The plastics break down more easily, and then you are drinking plastic. Soft plastics that we store food in can leach into the food.
Aluminum is a huge neurotoxin. Aluminum is found in lip gloss, baking powder, antiperspirants, etc. Some baking sodas have aluminum. Eliminate all sources of aluminum in your life. I have made tomato based casseroles in the past and put aluminum foil over them. Then I notice a hole in the aluminum from the tomato acid. So then you are eating aluminum. Never cook on aluminum foil as the aluminum will end up in your food. Don't cover your food with foil if it touches the food. Don't wrap your food in aluminum foil
Lead is another toxin. That has been a known fact for many, many years. I (Kay) had a very heavy lead toxicity. Where did I get it? My best guess is from cosmetics. I wore eyeliner, mascara and lipstick for many years. Each of them likely contained lead.
Cell phones use radiation to function. Be sure to keep your cell phone as far away from your body as much as possible, using the speaker whenever you can. Do not carry it on the same spot on your body each day. Do not live with it on your ear unless you want a brain tumor. Do not sleep in the same room with your cell phone.
All vaccines contain toxins. See: www.russellblaylockmd.com under his Swine Flu Data tab. It is quite scary as to what our government and doctors want to put in our bodies.
Having surgery is toxic. Anesthesia is toxic as are all prescription drugs. Kim had two surgeries in the recent years before his diagnosis. He had a very difficult time coming out of the anesthesia after his heart surgery.
Mercury is found in amalgam fillings. Do you have mercury in your mouth? Removing mercury fillings has to be done by someone that knows how to do it safely, a biological dentist, or your regular dentist if he displays a knowledge and respect for the toxicity potential of mercury. You can visit www.iaomt.org to find a biological dentist in your area.
Fluoride is highly toxic. It is an industrial waste. Don't use toothpaste with fluoride. Find a way to purify your water if your city has fluoridated water. I don't believe that just filtering it will remove the fluoride.
Chlorine is toxic. How often do you drink it? Hopefully never. But if we swim in it, the chlorine absorbs into our skin. We put a swim-in place pool so Kim could get exercise. He loves to swim and running has never been a good option for him. We tried to keep the pool clean with chlorine. One of our first clues that he had a severe problem (that we didn't recognize for what is was) was his inability to swim. He just could not get enough oxygen to swim.
All pharmaceutical drugs are toxics. By law, they cannot be a natural product in order to be patented. Thus they have side effects because the body does not know what to do with the foreign part of the drug. Some side effects are death. I have read from more than one source that statin drugs can cause ALS. A great resource for statins research is www.spacedoc.com
Mold is highly toxic and can cause ALS among other health issues. One man lives in a moldy apartment. His dog died of ALS type symptoms and now he has ALS.
Lyme disease can certainly have an impact on ALS, perhaps even creating it.
Pesticides, herbicides, MSG in food, aspartame (and all artificial sweeteners) are all highly toxic to the brain.
You have to believe you can get well. We did it, so you can too. One interesting thing I learned quite recently is that your mind controls your body. Your brain controls every function in your body. So use your brain to be positive, to believe that you can get better. Your cells listen to your thoughts and speech. Ask the Lord for his help. Then go to work to give your body its best chance possible to heal. Our protocol included hyperbarics, ozone, proper nutrition, exercise, and supplements, and avoidance of as many toxins as possible.
Feel free to contact us with questions. See the “contact us” form. We are happy to talk with you if that is helpful. Just ask for our phone number from the "contact us" form.
Get started and you will get there. Delaying treatment means the symptoms continue to worsen and then are that much harder to reverse.
