What is Ozone?
Ozone is 3 parts of oxygen or O3. It is formed when the oxygen molecule, O2 is split into single molecules, O, then combined with another O2 molecule to form O3. Ozone can be created by an ozone machine, or it occurs naturally in our atmosphere.
What are common uses for ozone?
Ozone is an approved processing ingredient for the organic food industry. It is one of the most effective ways to remove mold damage, and used to purify water from bottled water to swimming pools. It is used in dentistry and medicine to disinfect and treat diseases by limiting the effects of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and protozoa. Ozone therapy has been around and actively used in medicine for 100 years.
What is Ozone Therapy?
Ozone Therapy is a simple act of having ozone enter the body. It has been shown to improve the immune system and increases cellular energy (ATP- which creates energy in the body). Ozone can selectively seek out and kill viruses and bacteria in the body while not harming the body. Ozone can help reduce biofilm which is how unwanted bacteria hide and can help balance our oxidant and antioxidant levels in our body
Is ozone better than oxygen?
Ozone is about 20 times more soluble in water than oxygen. Hyperbaric Chambers are used to treat wounds, burns and other conditions, and require pressure to absorb the oxygen. Ozone is already super-absorbable, so no need for pressure, making makes ozone a very safe option.
Brief History of Ozone
Ozone was first discovered in 1840 and the first ozone generator was created in 1857. During World War I, ozone was used to fight gangrene and trench foot.
In the 1930’s, physicians started performing rectal and vaginal insufflations and injecting ozone gas into wounds, with over 8000 successful treatments without any side effects reports.
In the 1930’s, the American Medical Association set out to eliminate any treatments that competed with pharmaceutical drug treatments and continues yet today in many countries.
This has not stopped the advancement of ozone therapy in the USA and many countries around the world, though ozone therapy is not generally covered by any insurance. By the mid 1990’s, ozone started to gain popularity in the US and is becoming a sought-after treatment.
In April 2016, the FDA prohibited the medical use of ozone, "In any medical condition for which there is no proof of therapy safety and effectiveness", stating "Ozone is a toxic gas with no known useful medical application in specific, conjunctive, or preventive therapy.
There is much controversy concerning ozone therapy. I happen to believe ozone therapy is invaluable and a major reason for my success combating Bulbar ALS. I am living proof. I encourage each PALS to study, research, and chose your own course.
Following is a list ozone therapies I am familiar with and my experience with each. Some of these can be done in your own home with minimal expense, giving each PALS control over your treatments wherever and whenever you wish, at your own pace.
Advanced Methods of Ozone Therapy and my experience with the ones I have used.
I inserted the needle in my left forearm for my third Ozone Saline Solution IV while at the clinic and continued doing them for the next 15 months. However, all the needle injections were causing extensive damage to the veins in my forearms. After the first year or so, at times it would take five or six penetrations before I could get a vein that would flow. While returning to our home in Idaho in April 2013, we stopped in Salt Lake City to visit an old high school friend that was a nurse. We asked her to assist inserting an IV line. She was amazed that I was still doing my own IV insertions for the past 15 months, not only that I was crazy enough to do it at all, but that I had not had any infections from all the self treatments. She also had trouble getting a vein that would flow and suggested I have an IV Port place to continue the therapies.
I received the name of a doctor in Boise from another nurse friend. When he heard of my amazing success with the ALS diagnosis, he found it to be incredulous, and I had a port-a-cath placed a week later. I was also able to get assistance from other medical personnel that were very supportive because of my successful battle against ALS.
I continued the ozonated saline drips for the next 4 ½ years, then for some unknown reason, most likely because I did not properly follow all the procedures for maintaining the port or the glass bubbler and other equipment, my IV Port became infected. I first noticed the infection a few months earlier but we were unsuccessful in stopping the infection with the our holistic approach.
After a rough day in March of 2018 while playing golf in St George, Utah, I was rushed to the hospital. I was diagnosed with Sepsis and Vegetative Endocarditis, with the vegetative growth on my mitral valve, most likely because of my first open heart surgery in December of 2010 when a supportive ring was placed on that value. The doctors suggested I have another open-heart surgery to replace the valve, but we decided to go with an antibiotic treatment to stop the infection. My IV Port was removed with the 10 day stay in the hospital, and I was placed on another aggressive antibiotic IV. Released from the 10-day hospital visit, we climbed in our 40-foot motor home and I drove straight through to Star Idaho to continue the antibody IVs. I was released from the IV antibiotic therapy as the doctors thought the vegetative endocarditis had resolved. But five days later, on the 15th of May, everything came crashing down and we made a late-night rush to the emergency room, where they placed me back in the hospital in intensive care. My body was filled with bacterial infection, especially my brain, as well as several organs. I continued antibiotic IVs for an additional 5 weeks, before the heart surgeon could undergo another open-heart surgery to replace my mitral valve. I continued the daily antibiotic treatments in the hospital three weeks after the open-heart surgery and for another three weeks after my release.
I learned later that our heart surgeon told my wife Kay that he did not think I could even make it to the surgery. I never doubted that I could or would survive this ordeal.
The question is, were the self treating ozonated saline drip treatments worth all the pain and misery of the two years and counting afterwards? I have doubt I could have ever survived ALS without some 300 saline drips I did. I certainly could not have afforded to have them done by a doctor, should I have been able to find one. Yes, I would do it again, but hopefully not make whatever mistakes I made with the self treatments. I have seen too many close PALS friends go down because they were not able to do what I have done.
If you should choose to go this route, I can’t imagine doing it without an IV port-a-cath. This is something you should research, finding a source to have a port placed, finding the support you would need to obtain all the supplies and learn how to do all the treatments safely. My medical insurance covered the cost of the IV Port implant.
I believe the ozone insufflation therapy as explained below, in conjunction with ozone saunas, could possibly be as effective as the saline drips and eliminates the potential hazards of the self treatments I did.

Advanced Methods of Ozone Therapy and my experience with the ones I have used.
- Major Autohemotherapy is where blood is extracted from the body and mixed with ozone, then injected back into the body.
- Major Autohemotherapy (MAH) was originally developed by Dr. Hans Wolff, in Frankfurt, Germany, in the late 1960s. It is one of the preferred systemic ways to administer ozone to a patient. It is very safe, virtually free of negative side effects, and permits an ozone dosage range from very low to very high. A more intense application of this therapy is called 10-pass Ozone Therapy. It was created by an Austrian gynecologist named Dr. Johann Lahodny, and it is also called the Lahodny or Zotzmann method, or Ozone High Dose Therapy. There are reports of high rates of success treating Lyme Disease, which is beleived to be present in most ALS patients.
- Minor Autohemotherapy is where a small amount of blood is extracted and mixed with ozone. It is then injected back into the body like a shot.
- Likewise, I have had no experience with this treatment.
- Prolozone is where ozone is injected with sugar and vitamins into muscles and joints.
- Ozone IV saline is where ozone is infused into saline solution. The ozonated saline is then dripped slowly into a vein.

Ozone Therapy in your Home
- Rectal insufflation is a procedure running ozone gas into the rectum where it is absorbed into the blood system through the lining of the colon.
Above is the set-up we use in our confined bedroom space in our winter RV. Components are the oxygen concentrator, the flow regulator, the ozone generator, the water bubbler, and the ozone fill bag.
The oxygen machine should run at full flow, approximately 5 lpm, for 5 to 10 minutes then reduced to 2 lpm before attaching to the flow meter. The flow meter should be set from 1/16th to 1/8th lpm. The out-put line from the flow meter is then attached to the ozone oxygen in-put port of the ozone generator. The ozone out port goes to the in-line of a water bubbler then into a fill bag for the ozone. The ozone generator is then turned on. It takes just 3 or 4 minutes to fill the ozone bag, about 300 to 400 ml. The bag lock is then closed, and the ozone machine is immediately turned off. Connect the ozone filled bag to the catheter and insert the catheter 4 to 6 inches into the rectum. Use a little Vaseline or other lubricant on the catheter. Squeeze as much of the ozone bag as is comfortable to fill the colon and close the bag clip. Hold the ozone for 15 to 20 minutes as the ozone is absorbed into the colon walls. The ozone fill bag is optional, as the outline from the bubbler to the catheter can be run directly into the rectum or directly from the ozone machine if a bubbler is not use. I always ran the system without the ozone bag for 7 to 15 minutes but at a much higher flow rate, 2 or 3 lpm. I have learned that running the flow meter at a much lower flow, 1/8th to 1/16th lpm greatly increases the gamma or strength of the ozone, which I believe is much better. A first time user may want to run the ozone for much less time, then build up to longer sessions.
Using the bubbler to humidify the ozone is easier on the system and may improve the absorption into the colon walls, though the humidifier is also optional. I believe running the ozone for 15 to 20 minutes directly at the lower flow rate will give a much stronger dose of ozone and result in better absorption than the bagging system.
You will want to have a bowel movement to clear the colon just before the insufflation. Some may consider an enema, though I have never felt this necessary. I also caution that you should have a towel or protective pad beneath you, as invariably, the ozone insufflation will generate another bowel movement directly after the treatment, especially if running the ozone directly into the colon in place of using the fill bag. Making it to the toilet at times can be challenging.
Promo Life has a video that will offer direction for the rectal insufflation procedure they recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz-ZEOpgTsY&feature=youtu.be.
I used the rectal insufflation procedure twice a day (7 minutes each) for the first two or three years starting in March of 2012, then cut back to once a day for the next year or so. I never used the bagging system as recommended in the Promo Life video until recently, but have run the ozone directly into the colon, using a humidifier, for about 7 to 15 minutes each treatment. I left the flow at 2 or 3 lpm, which resulted in a much weaker ozone. I am now doing this treatment once or twice a day as explained above and have been alternating between the bagging and the direct procedures.
Catheter sizes vary. They can be cleaned and reused multiple times. I use a 200 ml syringe to flush the catheter, wash the outside with soapy water, and then immerse the business end of the catheter in rubbing alcohol for several minutes. I prefer the 18F size, 0.239” diameter, for ease of use. If you order equipment from Promolife, they will help you with all the connectors for which ever therapy you choose to use.

Vaginal insufflation is very similar to the rectal insufflation where ozone gas is inserted directly into the vaginal canal.
This system could be effective for any of the ladies wanting extra ozone therapy. My wife has used this, running directly from the ozone generator into a humidifier and then into the vagina. It could also be done using the same bagging system as the rectal insufflation. Promo Life is working on a video about the procedure that may be valuable.
Ear insufflation is the procedure of running small flow of ozone gas directly into the ear canal.
I used this procedure for the first year or so and reversed the flow into my ears using an inexpensive stethoscope. Be sure to have adequate ventilation. If you can smell the ozone, increase the ventilation. (Use of fans and an exhaust system will eliminate the ozone smell). I stopped doing this therapy, simply because I felt the Saline IV and the rectal were sufficient.
Below is a sauna tent very similar to the tent we use. It is a much lower cost (about $150) than other options also available. Though it may break down from the effects of ozone after some 100 ozone sessions. Though we have not yet used it 100 times, ours continues to work well after about 4 years and collapses easily for storage.

- Ozonated water is simply saturating a container of water then drinking the water immediately after, as the ozone will dissipate from the water after just a few minutes.
- I was never able to drink the ozonated water because of the trouble with getting the water into my lungs. I had to drink carbonated water to bypass my defective swallowing issues. Those swallowing issues cleared up after three years, but I simply did not feel the ozonated water was something I needed.
- Breathing ozone bubbled through oil is when ozone gas is passed through a bubbler then breathed through a breath mask. The oil converts the gas to a breathable form of ozone that does not irritate the lungs.
- An ozone sauna is where ozone gas is pumped into an enclosed heated area where the head is outside the enclosure. As the body heats up, the ozone is absorbed through the skin and systematically travels through the body.
Below is a sauna tent very similar to the tent we use. It is a much lower cost (about $150) than other options also available. We also made our own ozone salve by ozonating the olive oil for about 40 hours.
We use the same olive oil bubbler we used with the ozone breathe therapy to continue ozonating the olive oil. The oil becomes thick enough after about 40 hours that it can be spooned into a small container we keep in a refrigerator and use as a healing salve or a lubricant for the rectal insufflations.

Does Ozone Therapy Carry Any Risks?
- If performed properly, there are no issues to my knowledge that confirm any damage from ozone use. An ozone concentration in medicine is measured in ug/ml (micrograms per millilitre) or gamma. It all has to do with using the correct concentrations and volume of gas. One gamma is 699 ppm ozone to air.
- Most home ozone therapy treatments stay within the range of 20 to 60 gamma.
Using good ventilation will prevent breathing the ozone gas and no harm should occur. If you can smell the ozone, increase the ventilation. Utilizing a bathroom exhaust fan or table or floor fan should provide adequate ventilation. If you do get an overdose of ozone gas, a good counter action is taking a heavy dose, up to 4 grams, of a Vitamin C supplement.
This year (2020) we came across some additional information on ozone that is very valuable. Although ozone dissipates very rapidly, it leaves behind ozonites that continue to work for days.
EWOT (Exercise With Oxygen Therapy)
We started doing EWOT therapy after learning about it in 2017 as an alternative to HBOT and feel it is a better option for getting oxygen into the cells and a far less expensive therapy that can be done at home.
- Kim Cherry doing his EWOT Therapy
EWOT or Exercising with Oxygen Therapy is the use of supplemental oxygen to enhance workouts. By using an oxygen concentrator to filter out the nitrogen from the air, around 95% oxygen can be achieved. Since the air we breathe normally contains roughly 21% oxygen (maybe less), with EWOT we are using air that is 4 to 5 times the amount of oxygen than we breathe every day. (The bag is not filled when we took this picture. The picture was to show the EWOT system.)
A simple explanation of the way our bodies use oxygen is our lungs absorb oxygen from the air we breathe and then dissolves the oxygen gas into our blood. Inside the blood are our red blood cells, the vehicles that transport the oxygen throughout the body. This happens because the oxygen binds to the protein hemoglobin inside the red blood cells. In addition to hemoglobin/red blood cells, blood plasma also transports oxygen, although most of the oxygen will be distributed via hemoglobin in red blood cells.
As we age, our bodies lose the ability to maintain optimal levels of blood circulation, causing many problems including hypoxia. This is even more critical for someone fighting symptoms of ALS. Hypoxia is when cells in a region are not receiving adequate oxygen. When tissues and organs are in a prolonged hypoxic state, cell death will occur in that area. With EWOT the exercise comes into play because when we breathe oxygen (even pure oxygen), we are limited by our blood vessels to where the oxygen can get to. Increasing the heart rate during an exercise is important in all stages of life. Exercising increases heart rhythm, thereby increasing our body’s ability to move the hyper-oxygenated blood throughout the circulatory system. This helps get oxygen and nutrients to areas of our bodies that might not have been receiving an adequate amount. When our body does receive adequate blood flow and oxygenation, it is frequently able to effectively repair itself.
I started EWOT in May 2017. I came across a book titled Anti-Inflammatory Oxygen Therapy by Dr Mark Sircus, a strong advocate of EWOT, particularly as a cancer treatment. He recommends EWOT 15 minutes a day, three days a week. I used it 20 to 30 minutes, 5 or 6 times per week for the first several months. Though I had major health issues with the infection and sepsis in 2018, I believe the EWOT was beneficial in helping me survive all those challenges. I continue pushing to resolve vertigo issues from my 2018 battle. I believe continuing with the EWOT system will be beneficial, as will my ozone therapy, particularly rectal insufflations and the ozone saunas. With those therapies, coupled with diet adjustments, I expect to resolve all my issues.
There are possibly several sources for obtaining an EWOT system. The two sources we are familiar with are Promo Life (https://www.promolife.com/sajune-ewot-package/) and EWOT-USA (call Dr. Elksnis at 239-567-9988 or email of [email protected]. Mention Kim Cherry or ALS for a discount). You have the option of providing your own oxygen concentrator, and frequently can find used one locally at a much better price. You would also want to an exercise source. It does not need to be vigorous, but the more you can raise your heartrate, the better it will be. Even just walking in place will provide benefit until you get stronger.
Hyperbarics (HBOT)
Another oxidative therapy I did was hyperbarics (HBOT). It seemed to help me due to my severe breathing issues. We purchased our own low-pressure portable chamber and set it up in or home. The first six years I have done over 1000 dives, about 90 minutes per dive. But as a stand-alone therapy for ALS, it does not seem to be effective. It requires a huge commitment of time and money. Studying the use of EWOT, I have come to believe it is a better therapy for increasing the oxygen content of the body to combat the symptoms of ALS at a fraction of the cost.
Summary
As we have stated many times throughout this website, we are not medical experts. We have no formal training in the healing of ALS or any other health issue. We tell no one what they should do to reverse the devastating effects of ALS. We only tell what we have done. After receiving the ALS diagnosis in November of 2011 and being told that I had maybe one year but would never see two, I am well and enjoying life. Though I still have significant effects of the ALS battle, I am alive, walking, talking, and even playing a little golf.
We welcome your emails, texts, or calls. We will respond. We have no financial interest in anything associated with this website or the ALS challenge. Our mission is to help any others facing similar challenges to do find the healing as we have found.
Additional thought:
People often think that hyperbarics is the preferred treatment for ALS after reading in our website about our use of hyperbarics. It may have been important for Kim due to his severe breathing issues, but we don’t feel it is the best treatment for most with ALS. That is why we tried the EWOT to test it for an ALS treatment for PALS versus the hyperbarics.
However, Kim could go back to the beginning and compare the two treatments as Kim had already reversed his ALS. At the end of this year, a new person with escalating ALS symptoms contacted us and he has had an amazing response from the EWOT. Here is a short summary of his experience with EWOT and ozone and magnesium and important foods.
Message from Derek Gray on 12-30-2019
For two weeks now I have been doing EWOT with ozone sauna's and insufflations (rectal). When I started EWOT two weeks ago I could barely move the sticks on the elliptical. I have since graduated to kicking serious butt. I do EWOT twice a day and switch days on sauna/insufflation regimen.
Three days in I noticed a difference. For seven months EACH DAY WAS WORSE THAN THE PREVIOUS DAY....My body was dying, actually withering away to nothing... I could barely hold my cell phone to my mouth because my bicep was killing me! Two weeks later my symptoms are less, my energy is much more.
I spoke personally to Dr. Howard Robins (Mr. direct IV ozone himself), and he gave me a doctor to seek out close to me. The broccoli sprouts are wonderful. My client that I train has been making me juice with nothing but cruciferous veggies and of course the broccoli sprouts...her husband was given 2 months to live with bile duct cancer and is THRIVING 2 years later.
I am now maintaining HIGHER levels of magnesium (topically, drinking, orally), read about Dr. Sircus and his findings, BUT IT ALL COMES BACK TO YOU AND KIM.
With just two weeks under my belt I am excited about my journey, and how much more healing I can do. Better, stronger, faster (sounds like the old 6 million-dollar man show!).
